Unopened Gifts
I found this on Dave Burchette's blog and absolutely love the message...
A story we heard from some dear friends keeps weighing on my mind. This couple had left Valentine gifts for their grandchild at his home. When asked after Valentines how he liked his gift my friend got a blank look from the grandchild. He said he had not received a gift. Hoping that he had forgotten or misunderstood the couple contacted the boy’s parents.
“Did you receive the gifts?”
“Yes.”
“Did you give them to Billy?”
“No, he has not been good enough to get any gifts.”
My friend’s hearts were broken. The gift to their grandchild was given in love with no behavioral strings attached. They did not care if he had been good or bad. The gift was given simply because they loved him. The message sent to this boy is damaging both emotionally and spiritually. You must earn good gifts. If you don’t do right things you will not get good gifts.
My heart hurt for my friends and for this little boy. And I wondered if I don’t hurt the heart of Jesus by similarly selfish views of His grace. His forgiveness, acceptance and love is a gift. I don’t have to be “good enough” to open His gifts of grace. I have learned that I get good things and receive love only when I am good and do good things. My parents and pastor were pleased (and I later substituted God) when I was good. So I learned to do the dance early. I had better be good. Or least fool everyone around me to think that I was being good.
Ask any child around Christmas if they are being good and I will wager you will never hear this response.
“Well, to be honest, I am really struggling with the whole being nice thing. I have actually been pouty and I cried yesterday. It just isn’t working out this Christmas so I suspect the video game system will have to wait until I can act better.”
Nope. What you hear is the lie that I learned early and too often keep handy in my arsenal decades later.
“Oh yeah. I am being really good!”
I learned a couple of things early. I learned how hard it is to change behavior by sheer willpower and I learned that I could fool Santa and others by living a lie. I figured I had fooled him and to get the good stuff I would have to continue to hide the little boy who broke an ornament and then hid it. That little boy was not worthy of good things. So I hid the truth about who I was because if they knew who I really was I wouldn’t get good gifts.
Isn’t that too often how we view God? So I put on the mask and try to be really good for Jesus. If I can fool those around me maybe, just maybe, I can fool God too. Satan sells the lie so convincingly. And we buy it for months and years and even decades. The little boy who was not good enough to receive his Valentine gift of love is learning the lie. You have to shape up to receive God’s love and the love of others.
But God does not keep a list of what we have done wrong. He is not impressed by our hernia inducing straining to control sin. In fact He is saddened by that self-effort because we neglect the power that we have over sin.
Jesus offers us so many gifts. But the one we seem to have the hardest time unwrapping is the gift of grace. The gift that allows us to become who God desires us to become as we simply trust Him and quit trying to be “good” so we can earn His favor and gifts. We are saved by grace and faith in Christ. We become like Him by the same radical strategy. Faith that He has changed us into a new creation. And understanding the grace that gives us good gifts even when we don’t deserve them.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to get better to open His gifts of grace. Go straight to the gift of grace that Jesus left under the Cross. Open it. And clothe yourself in His salvation, acceptance and love. It may be the best gift you have ever given yourself. But not if the gift stays unopened.

Compassion International Needs Your Help
Compassion International is asking for help Haiti as well. Compassion operates 230 Child Development Centers in Haiti, and 1/3 of those are located in the area hardest hit by the quake. According to compassion, the children they serve in Haiti are in shock and face immediate needs for food, water, medical care, shelter and counseling. We have teams prepared to respond, and we are deeply committed to helping each child. They’re asking for monetary donations and prayer. For more information or to make a donation visit: https://www.compassion.com/contribution/giving/disasterrelief.htm?referer=105910
More info from Compassion...
Compassion in Haiti
• Compassion’s work in Haiti began in 1968.
• Currently, more than 64,600 children participate in 230 child development centers. At least one-third of Compassion’s centers are in the area hardest hit by the earthquake.
• Compassion partners with churches to help them provide Haitian children with the opportunity to rise above their circumstances and become all God has created them to be.
What is Compassion Doing?
Without communication, we don’t have specifics for this crisis. But our Compassion guidelines for disaster response spell out pretty specifically what the field should do and can do in response to a crisis.
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
In the immediate few hours after a disaster, Compassion locates those Compassion-assisted children and families who have been affected by the disaster, and provide them with the following:
• Temporary Shelter: Shelter needed to remove the families out of the elements and into
safety. Items like tents, tarps, blankets & mosquito nets are often supplied.
• Basic Sanitation: Items such as latrines and temporary hand washing station.
• Cooking Utensils & Fuel: Things like pots and pans, plates, cups, eating utensils,
as well as a means for cooking food item
• Emergency Clothing: 2-3 day supply of clothing for each family member.
• Preventive Health Services: Control of communicable diseases (e.g. measles, malaria) and outbreak control (e.g. cholera, meningitis, typhoid) needed to ensure health is not negatively affected as a result of the disaster.
Compassion staff will also set up a temporary meeting area called a “child area”, and stock it with crayons; paper; stuffed animals, etc. A “child area” is described as a safe place for registered children & their siblings to go during the aftermath of a disaster. Here they can find comfort in activities (such as coloring & games) as well as support and encouragement from project staff.
ON-GOING RESPONSE
On-going efforts in the wake of a disaster or crisis are provided in the form of:
• Family Reunification: Locating & unifying Compassion families who were separated during the
aftermath of the disaster
• Food & Water: Emergency food & water needed until the family is re-established and able to keep themselves at the level of nutrition they were prior to the disaster
• Personal Items: Toiletries and other personal items needed to maintain hygiene during the aftermath of the disaster
• Trauma Counseling/Spiritual Support: Counseling needed on an individual or group basis; It is
preferred that his counseling be provided by Christian health workers or pastoral staff.
• Medical Attention: Any medical needs resulting from the disaster
• Funeral Expenses
Why Compassion?
• Compassion is working around the globe to permanently rescue children from poverty, not merely sustain them through it.
• Compassion recognizes there is no such thing as a cookie-cutter kid. That is why we take an
individualized, holistic approach to meet the personal needs of each of the more than 1 million children we serve in 25 of the world’s poorest countries on four continents.
• Recognizing that poverty is more than a lack of money, Compassion’s unique holistic combination of physical, economic, educational and spiritual development programs helps Compassion-sponsored children to thrive, not just survive.
• Because local churches know the unique needs of their community’s children, Compassion works exclusively through local churches, partnering with more than 5,000 community congregations from 60 denominations.
• Compassion is consistently recognized for its financial integrity by organizations including:
The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “Philanthropy 400”
The NonProfit Times’ “Top 100 Revenues”
The American Institute of Philanthropy’s “Top Rated Charities”
Charity Navigator, who has awarded Compassion International it’s highest rating – four
stars – for seven consecutive years.

Update From Hands and Feet Project in Haiti
Here is an update from Mark Stuart, the former lead singer of Audio Adrenaline. His parents run an orphanage in Haiti, part of the "Hands and Feet Project" founded by Audio Adrenaline. Mark and his wife were at the orphanage in Haiti when the earthquake happened. Here is his account of the situation there. If you are interested in helping the orphanages they operate, visit www.handsandfeetproject.org
"We don't have any cell phone coverage...just email. Everyone here at the Jacmel Hands and Feet project is fine. We haven't slept since yesterday, but all the children and staff are safe. Right now, the kids and nannies are falling asleep out in the yard away from the buildings. My wife and I are answering tons of emails as quick as possible.
The situation in Jacmel is very bad. Hotels, hospitals, houses, and schools have collapsed. The aftershocks continue to scare all of the children and the adults for that matter. The after shocks alone are averaging over 5pts on the richter scale. Its not fun.
Our needs are food, water, and propane. Most of the food for us and the Jacmel area comes from Port au Prince and the mountain pass to Port au Prince has split apart. My wife and I were scheduled to depart for Miami on Friday, but the airport is shut down and the road is obviously impassable. We may be evacuated in a few days, but that is ok we are needed here. Our other orphanage in Grand Goave has been destroyed. The children there are ok, but lack a place to stay for now. They are on the far side of the mountain from us...closer to Port ar Prince.
We need help..if people want to donate go to handsandfeetproject.org and give. Over the next few weeks and months we MUST be prepared to take as many orphans as possible. Pleas continue to pray for the people of Haiti.

What child doesn’t get excited seeing bright red fire engines, sirens screaming, whizzing down the street? Or hope to become a firefighter when he or she grows up? On Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16, 2010 at Joel Coliseum, youngsters and their families will get a chance to experience first-hand the exciting world of firefighting and rescue at the Piedmont Fire Expo, the annual fundraiser of the Forsyth County Fire and Rescue Association.
The Piedmont Fire Expo is one of the largest shows in the Southeast at which vendors can showcase new equipment and fire and rescue personnel receive advanced and innovative training. It’s also a day for community members to witness first hand the "live action" that they rarely get to see in person. During both days of the Expo, several training exercises will be presented, including vehicle extrication demonstrations and propane gas training.
"The propane gas training is very visual, with lots of fire in a controlled environment," said Steve Ogburn, a volunteer firefighter at Mineral Springs Fire Department. "We’ll also practice rescue techniques on various types of vehicles, as well as keep up-to-date on all the new hybrid vehicles that come on the market."
Hybrid vehicles, which run on a combination of electricity or gas, are becoming popular in the United States. But with all their benefits, they pose a risk to rescue workers in the event of an accident. "With all the battery lines and high voltage, we have to know where to make the cuts in the car to get people out safely and quickly," Ogburn said. "If we make a wrong cut, we could get electrocuted. You can see why we have to have constant training."
For the last 53 years, The Forsyth County Fire and Rescue Association, with approximately 1,200 current firefighters as members, has supported member fire departments and rescue squads in local communities, offering year-round training and other valuable services at no cost.
"That ‘no-cost’ benefit is very important, since each firefighter has to maintain a certain amount of training each year," said Tim Lasley, Fire Chief at Vienna Fire Department, and association co-chair. "Our association helps make it possible for volunteers to keep doing what they love to do, without having a financial burden paying for all the training."
On average, the Association provides over 1,100 hours of instruction with almost 12,000 students, saving Forsyth County taxpayers about $60,000, over the past few years. If it wasn’t for the Piedmont Fire Expo, each department in Forsyth County would have to increase its fire taxes in order to maintain training.
Other events at the January Expo scheduled to be included are hands-on fire-extinguisher safety stations, a fire safety house that children can crawl through and learn very important safety tips, photo opportunities with Sparky the Dog, Smokey the Bear, kid giveaways and many more hands-on activities for the entire family.
The Expo, sponsored by Triad Fire and Reynolds American, is open Friday, January 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, January 16th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, and free for children 16 and under. Parking is also free. Sponsorships for the Expo are still available. For more details, visit www.piedmontfireexpo.org2010 Piedmont Fire Expo

Gettin' Fit with Allen--Eat Your Way to Great Abs
Call or Email Allen about special rates for the 12-Week Fitness Challenge, plus your chance to win 12 weeks of personal training free!
No matter how much effort you put into creating a six-pack, no one's going to see it if it's covered by a layer of flab. (The good news? While it's impossible to "spot-reduce," abdominal fat is often the first to go when you start losing weight.)
The following seven principles can give you an extra edge, and will help ensure that the effort you're putting into your abs will bring you the results you want.
1. Get plenty of protein. Eating enough lean protein promotes fat loss and muscle gain, the two most important elements for developing great abs. It also helps keep you from getting hungry while you're eating right. You don't have to gobble down 12-ounce steaks—just eat a normal portion of lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy, or vegetarian protein with every meal, and make sure your snacks contain some protein, too. If you still have a hard time getting enough in your diet.
By the way, protein is especially important in the morning, when a lot of people don't get as much as they should. A protein-rich breakfast will help keep your blood sugar steady for hours, preventing the dips that can lead to cravings later in the day. (Try some low-fat chicken sausage, or an omelet with one whole egg and three egg whites, along with fruit or whole-grain toast.)
2. Reconsider your carbs. Despite the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, the average American meal is still too high in sugar and fast-burning starches to bring body fat down to ab-baring levels. It's time to say goodbye to sweetened soda, ditch the Doritos®, and save the cake for your birthday. If your fitness plan calls for a sports drink before a long cardio workout, , that's fine. But the rest of the time, stick with foods that are on the low end of the glycemic index (refer to GlycemicIndex.com for more information)—these foods burn more slowly, so they won't spike your blood sugar and insulin levels.
3. Have fun with fiber. Something about the word fiber just doesn't sound appetizing. But high-fiber foods can actually be quite delicious: fresh berries and other fruits, salads loaded with colorful produce, your favorite steamed vegetables or vegetable soup, stews or chili made with beans, chewy whole-grain breads and cereals . . . You get the picture. (These foods just happen to be loaded with nutrients as well.) High-fiber foods keep you fuller with fewer calories, and they help keep your digestive system working at its best—a double-whammy for getting rid of belly bulge.
4. Enjoy some yogurt. Probiotics, the healthful bacteria found in yogurt and other fermented foods, have been proven to help reduce belly fat. In a recent study in Finland, new mothers who took probiotic supplements averaged smaller waist circumferences, and lower body fat in general, than those who didn't take probiotic supplements. And while the topic is still controversial, studies have found that eating lots of calcium-rich dairy foods like yogurt may increase overall weight loss.
5. Don't forget to eat. Tempted to lower your daily calorie count by skipping meals? Don't. Going hungry can raise your levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol, which research has found can increase belly fat even in otherwise thin women. And eating too infrequently can lower your metabolism and energy levels, while increasing the chance that you'll get too hungry and decide to chuck your meal plan entirely. If you're eating the right foods, regular meals and snacks will keep your body fueled while you're working toward that strong core.
6. Drink more fluids. Hydration is important when you're on a fitness plan, but drinking plenty of water has particular benefits for your midsection. It helps keep your stomach full, so you don't overeat, and it helps flush out excess sodium to prevent belly bloating. (Eating more potassium-rich foods, such as tomatoes and bananas, will also help in this area.
Plain ol' H20 can't be beat, but you can also switch it up with flavored waters, iced tea, and anything else you like to drink that isn't full of sweeteners. How much do you need? The old rule of 8 glasses a day is a good start, but everyone is different: drink more if you're exercising or it's hot out, and drink less if you're running to the bathroom every 5 minutes.
7. With an exceptions. It's time to cut down on those mood-altering substances like coffee. Too much caffeine raises your cortisol levels and can impair your sleep, which can lower the production of fitness-promoting hormones.
If you add these rules to your fitness plan, you're sure to see faster improvements in your midsection. Of course, there's an added bonus to eating this way: it'll keep you healthier, too.

EHME Lexington- Sunday Update
Day 5 Brings More Spectators for
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Lexington, NC – On Sunday, day 5 of the Creasey family Extreme Makeover: Home Edition spectators began to line the barricade early. By 9 am, at least 50 pairs of eyes watched as the activity on the build site continued. Neighbors of the Creasey’s had started their days early as to get a view of the build before they began their days.
David Craver, Brick Mason by trade, stood behind the barricade talking about his experience as one of the working volunteers on Thursday, day 2. He worked through the night in the pouring rains with the winds whipping around digging the footings readying the site for laying the block for the foundation. He heard about the project at the Lexington Barbecue Festival and immediately went online to sign up. “When you get that many brick masons together and no one gets in a fight, you know something special is happening,” remarks David. David and his wife have been behind the barricade on both Friday and Saturday and intend to be back on Monday.
George Burns, neighbor, and an Army Veteran walked down to see the progress. His daughter, Cheyenne Powers came down the street in her electric wheel chair on Saturday to see what was happening. George can’t ever remember so much activity in his neighborhood and remarks, “Anytime folks help someone else, not wanting anything in return, it’s a good thing.”
Joe Hale, den leader for a Tiger Cub Scout group brought his young son, Garrett, first year Tiger Scout out to see how a community comes together to help a family.
Local artist Bob Timberlake came out with his wife, Kay and granddaughter Kate to see the build. He was amazed of all that had taken place in just 5 short days. He remarked how proud and thankful he was to all the construction crews and volunteers that have given their time and talents to such a worthy project.
Day 5 spectators watch as the muddy yard begins to take shape. Retaining walls have been built and shrubs and trees are being planted. It is beginning to look more and more like the end is near

EHME Lexington-Saturday Update
The Sun Shines on the Creasey Home
For Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Lexington, NC - After three rainy gusty windy days for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Creasey family build the winds settled to a comfortable breeze and the sun came out on day 4. The projects contractor, Jason Hedrick, Hedrick creative Building, felt confident with the weather conditions change, his crews would make up the three hours they had lost in the bad conditions on the previous days.
As the hours of the day passed, spectators saw the grass turf put down in the side yard for a play area for the Creasey children. As the porch took shape on the front of the house, the walls were going up inside. Roofers on top were laying the tin panels. In sync, the sea of blue shirt construction crews each performed their task for their portion of the job. Cheers could be heard from the spectator barricade as Jason Hedrick stepped up on a mound of dirt and joked with the crews across the street. Around 5 pm, the paint was delivered, a good indication the inside walls were completed and ready for their coating.
On the morning of Sunday, day 5, the wall paper is up in the house, the siding is going on the outside and the driveway is poured. Crews were very busy during the night….on the inside, painting and painting and painting.
We’re getting closer to reveal!

EHME Lexington-Day 3 Update
Day 3 - At the Creasey Home
On Friday morning, day 3 of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build for the Creasey’s dream home began with the foundation set and the framers in place to begin the building process. First the floor went down followed by exterior pre-fab walls, the frame work inside and the trusses lifted by the crane to the top of the structure. At 5:40 pm, the build was right on schedule. At 11:00 pm, the framers were ready to sheet the roof.
Spectators lined the barricades along the yards across the street from the build site. Folks of all ages came out to see the amazing house taking shape right before their eyes. Folks came in support of William and Tricia Creasey and their girls. Kristie Alvater, co-worker of William at Guilford County School Technology Service took Friday off just to be at the site. Kristie has been a co-worker and friend to William for more than 10 years and became very emotional as she spoke of how deserving this family is to have something so wonderful happening in their lives.
Wiliiam’s dad came out. Tricia’s mom, dad and sister came. All to see the amazing build of a dream house for the Creasey’s.
Eighteen year old, Madeline Causey stood at the barricade with a batch of cookies she had made for the volunteers to show her appreciation of their time and efforts.
The build continued through the night with new crews coming in as others took off for rest to work another day.
On Saturday, day 4, inside walls go up and the painting begins. Outside the muddy sludgy mess will begin to look like a family yard again as the landscapers arrive.
We’re halfway there!

(November 11, 2009) – “Good Morning Creasy Family!” was the phrase enthusiastically shouted by Ty Pennington of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition as the Creasy family ran out of their Davidson County house, they were about to receive the greatest surprise of their lives. Out of all the builders in the Triad area, ABC chose green certified Hedrick Creative Building to help one deserving family, the Creasy’s, of Lexington, North Carolina get the home of their dreams.
Tricia Creasey, a beloved teacher who is battling stage four cancer while her husband struggles to keep their home livable for their family. For the “Extreme Makeover” team, along with hundreds of local volunteers, it’s a heartfelt opportunity to give back to a couple who enjoy going above and beyond for their community in the face of their own medical and financial hardships.William and Tricia Creasey have always been well known in Lexington as a wonderful and generous couple who are devoted to each other, their children, the school where they worked, and their community. Three years ago, Tricia was diagnosed with colon cancer. A dedicated seventh grade teacher, Tricia refused to stop teaching while undergoing the chemotherapy and major surgery her treatment required. In May of 2009, Tricia’s cancer returned and spread to her lymph nodes. To prevent the cancer from spreading any further, Tricia receives weekly chemotherapy treatments that cost the family $1,400 a month after insurance. The Creasey’s bought their home as a fixer-upper, but the necessary repairs and renovations have taken a back seat to Tricia’s medical care. Numerous structural problems such as holes in the floor, walls, and roof where animals can get in, cracks in the foundation, lack of insulation, and extensive water damage from a leaking roof create additional, everyday obstacles and hazards for Tricia and the entire family. In addition, the house has only one bathroom, which Tricia must often occupy for hours a time to take care of medical necessities. Now, it’s up to Ty and the gang to build William, 40, Tricia, 37, Brittany, 12, Makenzie, 5, and Makayla, 5, a new home that will not only be a safe place for Tricia to battle her cancer, but provide a place for family, friends, and the community to gather and offer support to this warm-hearted family. The Creasey family will go on vacation to Walt Disney World while “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team leader Ty Pennington, designers Ed Sanders, Paul DiMeo, and Tracy Hutson, local builder Hedrick Creative Building, LLC, and more than a thousand community volunteers rebuild their home.
The location address is: The Creasey Family 2844 Allred Road, Lexington, NC 27292.
