Mother-Daughter Event featuring Rebecca St. James Coming to Kernersville

‘SHE' CONFERENCE EVENT COMING TO KERNERSVILLE WITH GRAMMY AWARD WINNING CHRISTIAN SINGER REBECCA ST. JAMES—
OCTOBER 8TH
UNIQUE EVENT FOR “MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS”
BRIDGES GENERATION GAP WITH AUTHENTIC COMMUNICATION

(Nashville, Tennessee) --September 20, 2010 --In a world filled with 'special events, girls, mark your calendars on Friday, October 8th for one event coming to the local area that truly lives up to the promise of being special.

Grammy Award winning Christian singer, Rebecca St. James is the centerpiece of the "SHE" conference event coming to Kernersville's First Christian Church for a 7:00 P.M. presentation.

The church is located at 1130 North Main Street. Both general admission ($15.00) and Gold Circle tickets ($18) are available through the church, local LifeWay bookstores, and locally by calling (336) 996-7388. Tickets may be resourced online at www.itickets.com and by calling 1-800-955-9324. Tickets will also be available at the door night of the event. More information will be available online at the church website: www.fccministries.com

In the clamor of tweets and iPods, mini-vans and over-booked moms, the SHE event is the rare moment when moms and daughters and their friends can connect for a fun and spiritually uplifting session on life, love, and the pursuit of the real issues that matter to ‘girls’ of all ages.

The conference is built on the concept of celebrating the beauty of becoming a total ‘SHE' woman-safe, healthy and empowered -in every season of life. The conference series was inspired by St. James' best selling books SHE and SHE TEEN (Tyndale) which have been an inspiration to teens and adult women in finding their foundation for life in God's plan for living.

A testimony to the Australian born singer’s creditability as a respected "voice" with today’s young women is seen in her recent book, PURE (Faithwords/Hatchette) being nationally honored with a nomination in the Youth/Young Adult category for "Best Book of 2009” accolades from the prestigious Christian Retailers Association in their annual Reader’s Choice Awards. In the midst of connecting globally with her music, St. James has remarkably found time to author more than a half-dozen best selling Christian books that speak to the youth culture of today and beyond.

Adding to the perfect balance of Rebecca's connection with the audience from her life experiences as a vital young single woman is her ideal counter-balance. Joining her on the SHE conference stage is her real life mentor, Evie Tornquist, herself an award winning Christian singer whose career throughout the 70's and ‘80's inspired millions of record sales and an enduring international following. Now married with two grown children, Evie has been both an inspiration and close personal friend and role model to the younger St. James who herself is no stranger to the term ‘role model.' On outspoken voice for her generation, Rebecca has taken her stand for purity onto concerts stages all over the world. Her best selling single Wait For Me inspired both a best selling book and a message that she has used to passionately inspire an entire generation of young people.

Whether through the rock influenced music of Rebecca, the softer sounds of Evie, or the mutual straight talk from the heart that is the core center of the evening, both women set their music and their life experiences before their audience-welcoming their questions, offering real answers, sharing God's grace, His love, and His passion to reach women with the message of how to live life based on practical biblical principals in a rubber-meets-the-road 21st century.

‘We talk about the things women care about from finding their purpose and security in God, dating and relationship issues, to mentoring, to communicating more effectively with each other-whether teen to parent-or friend to friend," notes Rebecca. Adds Evie: "It's all about celebrating being "girls of God" at every age.”

As Heard on Your Family Friendly Morning Show 9/29: Keeping the Little in Your Girl/Making Your Resume Shine

Today we spoke with "Secret Keeper Girl" series author, Dannah Gresh.  She has a new book called "Six Ways to Keep the Little in Your Girl" that addresses the many pressures that girls today face and how to protect your daughter.  For more information, visit Dannah's website:  http://www.purefreedom.org/
________________________________________________________________________

Randy Wooden from The Wooden Group joined us today to talk about resume writing.  According to Randy, these are the 3 most important components of your resume:

1-Key Words - More and more, companies are using software to scan through resumes, looking for key words that match the posted job description for the position being filled.  Make sure your resume includes these words in the "Career Objectives" section of your resume.

2-Accomplishments - You must seperate yourself from other people with similar qualifications applying for the same postition .  Do this by listing your accomplishments at past jobs, quantifying whenever possible (ie- I increased sales in my department by 20%)

3-Overall Appearance - As with everything, first impressions are so important.  Make sure your resume is visually appealing, laid out well and makes good use of "white space".

For more infomation about the services offered at the Wooden Group or about their free Thursday seminars, you can call Randy at 793-8040 or visit the website: http://www.woodengroup.com/

As Heard on Your Family Friendly Morning Show 9/28- How Much do You Know About Religion?/Chatting with Josh Wilson

Are You Smarter Than an Atheist? :)

According to a recent Pew Research study, "Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge, outperforming evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.

On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively. Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for differing levels of education."

Here is a link to the full article and a sample quiz so you can test and compare your knowledge:  http://www.pewforum.org/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx?loc=interstitialskip

In addition to taking advantage of the above special promotions, I've found a few other ways to save money when my family of 5 heads to the fair:
  • Talk about how much you are willing to spend ahead of time.  Let your kids know how much money you have budgeted for the fair and what that means as far as how many rides/games/food items you'll be able to buy.
  • Give each child their own money to spend however they want to and once it's gone, it's gone.  This also gives a great lesson in budgeting.  If a child chooses to spend lots of money on a game or junk food and then doesn't have any money left to ride their favorite ride, they've learned an important principle in money management.
  • Eat before you go and plan on sharing the things you buy there. If you plan to eat dinner at the fair and enjoy extra goodies like elephant ears, ice cream and other deep-fried delecacies, you will spend A LOT of cash.  So,we usually stop at McDonalds on the way to the fair (a treat in iteslf) and hit the dollar menu.  Then, we get some fun food while we are at the fair, but we share it.  That way we all get to taste the treats we love without going broke!_____________________________________________________________

Fall is here!  The good news is that the weather is more conducive to outdoor workouts, however the days are getting shorter which means you have less time to get out the door and work out.  The other concern is that Halloween candy, Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas Cookies are right around the corner.  How can you prevent gaining weight from the oncoming onslaught of calories?

More "Rappin for Mac" Entries

We learned last week that WBFJ listeners are a creative bunch (not that there was ever a doubt in our minds).  We asked you to write a rap about winter or about your plans for "Tonight" for your chance to win passes to Winter Wonderslam with Toby Mac & Skillet.    We were able to send several winners to the show, but there were several more of you that sent in raps and we thought these rhymes deserved their moment in the spotlight as well!

Mia's Winter
a carolina winter's a blessing and a curse
we be wishing for snow but what we get is something worse.
it's a curious thing they like to call a wintry mix
but it's just sleet and ice with snow that never sticks.
our feet are cold, so we be jumping up and down
but no need for boots cuz ain't a flake on the ground.
when we do get snow we know the weekend's come
the kids get ready for half a week of fun.
if you wanna venture out, you had better think twice.
just chill for a while, heed the weather man's advice.

Markie Mark's Winter Rap
Alright… Alright…
Yo Vern! Drop me a beat!
(mmmm.. mmmm…)
Here we go … Here we go …
Woke up this morning with a chill in the air –
My son running around with some wild hair!
My daughter in the kitchen with a bowl full of cereal –
The Lord has truly blessed me, that’s 4-REAL!
My wife is getting ready, the kids go to pre-school –
I’m looking out the window, missing days at the pool!
Head to the car and drop the top back –
Click – WBFJ, Hey it’s Toby Mac!
Praise be to God for he has blessed me –
And to all who are listening, Jesus Christ is the key!
Praise be to God, Jesus Christ is the key!
Yes – Yes – Jesus Christ saved me!

It's Winter Time
by James
It’s winter time, It’s winter time
Turn off the A/C turn on the heat again
Shut out the cold, nice and warm within,
Getting out the fleece so good against the skin,
It’s winter time, it’s winter time,
The Santa Man will soon be on his way,
Eight reindeer and gifts on his sleigh,
Singing jingle Bells all the way,
long is the night, short is the day,
It’s winter time, it’s winter time,
People so nice, yippee yo ki-a
we wish you a merry Christmas
And Jesus is the Way.

Tina's Rap about Tonight
Going to pick the boys up after school
Hit the homework, it’s the rule
Making dinner for the man
I think we’re having chicken again!

Kathy's Rap
Hey you have you heard about Toby?
I heard that his show be
Lifting up Jesus, Lifting up God
Forget your worries, Just PRAISE the Lord!!!
Thanks to WBFJ,
We’ll be Jammin the night away

Kelly's Quilting Rap
I'm going down to Mo'ville
Going to see a pal
She wants to learn to make a quilt
I'm going to show her how
We got our scraps of fabric
In our machines we've got thread
We're going to make a blanket
To keep us warm in bed
Women working with their hands
Like Proverbs 31
Always giving glory
To the Father and His Son

Tabby's Rappin Crew
Winter is freezing
and we're not teasing.
When what's cold is your nose,
and you can't feel your toes.
There might be snow on the ground,
or it might be all around.
Don't let it make you frown,
Cause Toby's coming to town.
So at Winter Slam
We're really gonna jam!

Maggie-Mac's Winter Jam
You know I love it when it's WIN-tur!
Snows fallin' all pristine and Qui-et,
Watchin' the kids out in the yard's a Ri-ot,
They sleddin' down the driveway with their old to-boggans,
Climb to the top and then crash at the bottom,
I hear 'em laughin' brings a smile to my face,
Think back when I was younger and was in their place,
We liked to rock our beanies and our bright leg warmers,
Now I'm left inside I'm the official informer,
Schools out are you ready or not?
The kids are goin' crazy and the cocoa's hot!
It's quiet outside but in the house it's jumpin,
Turn up the music and the bass is bumpin,
Over in the corner sit and sip my tea,
I'm over here chillin' by the Nativity,
Set my mama gave me back when I was little,
Sippin' tea, head bangin, compin peanut brittle,
You see, I love it when it's WIN-tur!
You got evergreens, and packages, and spiral hams,
Santa Claus, Silent Night, and awesome jams,
But the reason for the season don't let Him be a stranger,
I'm talkin' bout my savior brought to me in a manger,
A scared kid sleepin in the hay,
Her baby just sleeps and her husband prays,
That they'll make it out alive and how could he know,
That the baby in his arms would make it so,
So yeah I like the cocoa...IT'S HOT IT'S HOT!!!
And yeah I like the snow...IT'S NOT IT'S NOT!!!
I love when school is cancelled...WOO-HOO WOO-HOO!!!
And trying to wait up for Santa...IT'S A HOOT A HOOT!!!
But the best thing 'bout the season-
It's the rhyme and it's the reason-
It's the reason that we have it-
And it's becomin' quite the habit-
It's the quiet it's the loud,
It's alone and it's the crowd,
IT'S CHRIST SENT AS A BABY AND YES AND ALL THE MUSIC BABY!
Rockin' Christmas...rockin' winter...come on you know IT'S A WINNER!!!!!
word!
I'm done! I'm out! Ho, ho...ho!

Word

This my story about tonight

So You Think You Don't Have Time to Work Out

Thanks to Allen Branch from Fitness One in Kernersville for providing this "excuse busting" illustration of how we really do have time to fit exercise into our lives.  According to Allen, you can get and stay fit in as little as 4 hours per week.  Check out the chart below to see how you can find fitness time in your weekly schedule.

Item                                Time Required             Remaining Hours

Hours in Week                  24 x 7 = 168                         168

Sleep                                    8 x 7 = 56                        112

Work                                   9 x 5 = 45                          67

Commuting                          2 x 5 = 10                          57

Preparing Meals                    1 x 7 = 7                           50

Housework                           1 x 7 = 7                           43

Showering/Dressing/              1 x 7 = 7                          36
Personal Care

TV/Computer/                      2 x 7 = 14                         22
”Screen Time”

Church/Religious/                  1 x 7 = 7                           15
Volunteer Activites

Kids After School Activites    2 x 5 = 10                          5

See!  After everything else, you still have 5 hours left...plenty of time to fit in exercise!

Morning Show Wrap Up 8/27--Kisses for Kate/Insurance Planning/Whoopie Pie

Kisses for Kate:

In August 2008, three-year old Kate Thornton was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Shortly after Kate’s leukemia diagnosis, loving friends and family recognized that the Thornton family was in need of a larger home. The family of 7 shares a 3-bedroom, 1200-square foot house. Kate does not have a bedroom of her own to come home to and recuperate from treatments. When home, she sleeps on the couch. In addition, the home was not easily accessible for Kate with her adaptive equipment.

On August 23, 2010, The Thornton family received the devastating news that Kate is in need of hospice care. There is no more treatment that the doctors believe will save Kate’s life. It is time to take her home and keep her comfortable. After two years of fighting, the family must change their course to cherishing these last weeks with their precious daughter/sister. We are acting in faith, knowing that what God called us to do, obtain a home for this family, will be completed. PLEASE help us give this family a new home… Kate is running out of time.

Get Your Metabolic Motor Running

Think a "slow metabolism" is hindering your weight loss?  Read these tips from Allen Branch of Fitness One Training in Kernersville:

Understanding your Metabolism

When it comes to understanding fat loss, too many people are missing the forest for the trees. They are approaching their fat loss programs all wrong, and stagnating as a result. A big thanks goes to the mainstream media and "The Big Box" gyms for all of the really poor advice on ”cardio” being best for fat loss, long distance marathon runs on a treadmill or the endless cardio sessions on an ellyptical or exercise bike. More on that in a minute.

Assuming your goal is fat loss, then metabolic optimization should be our primary focus. Some of you might be shocked by my use of big words in that last sentence, so let me explain.

Your metabolic rate, or "metabolism" is the rate at which you burn calories in a given day. From a fat loss perspective, the more calories we expend per day, the better. So your training should be focused on precisely that – burning more calories per 24 hours – not just burning more calories during a workout. Far too many people I see in average gyms look the absolute same after months of “cardio” training as the day the walked in the door. In fact, we all might know those people who have been "members" of a Box gym for a long time, and their loks have never changed at all. In years.

If they were to follow some basic principles, all that could change.

Big Moves – Big Results
To increase your metabolism working out with resistance is a must. Where the weight comes from is less important. For instance I can create a routine that would set your metabolism on fire using just your bodyweight and nothing else. (But working out with weights, dumbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, TRX Suspension ect. like we do at Fitness One is just fun.)

One critical piece of information we must remember is the more muscle you carry on your frame, the higher your metabolism. (Side Note: this does NOT mean you need to or could possibly look like the Hulk ) You should want to stimulate as much of that muscle as you can. This is because muscle is metabolically active, and it requires energy to exist. So the goal when working out should be to cause as big a "metabolic disruption" as possible. The more muscle you stimulate, the bigger the disruption and thus the bigger the metabolic increase.

For example a session of 10 sets of deadlifts would cause a greater metabolic shift then a session of 10 sets of bicep curls. Deadlfits use almost your entire body, while curls only use the bicep muscle (give or take). The net effect will be increased calorie utilization over the long term as the metabolic increase from resistance sessions can last 48 hours. In a class at Fitness One for example, you see moves like the dumbbell curl squat and press, which is a compound move utilizing the entire body in a set.

From a metabolic perspective, the bigger the move the better off you are. This is critical especially since most of us are under a time cruch and need to get the biggest bang for our buck time wise. Our new "Minute to win it" circuits help with that as well.

Munch a Bunch
Eating regularly increases your metabolism, while skipping meals actually lowers it. Eating multiple times per day is an easy way to keep your metabolism humming along. For example, you will increase you metabolism more if you consume your daily allotment of calories over 5 meals than you would if it were only on 1 or 2 meals. Here's food for thought: Sumo wrestlers only eat one meal per day.

Do Not Drop Calories Too Low
Your body is extremely smart, or exceptionally stupid depending on how you look at it. Your body probably does not know that you would like to drop a few pounds. If it did, it would not create so many road blocks making that endeavor so difficult. As you drop your calories, your body responds by lowering the rate at which your body uses those calories. It is a survival mechanism preventing you from starving to death.

Let's say your metabolic maintenance level is 3000 cals, and you drop your intake to 1500 cals in a effort to drop some weight. Your body will soon respond by lowering your maintenance level to meet the new lower calorie intake level. Now what do you do? Drop your calories again?

While calorie restriction is a key move, it does not mean starve. Most times we are consuming 2-3x what we need, so we attempt to adjust your calories to get them in check, not starve you to death..

The better way is to not drastically drop your calories and take some of the other measures in this article to make certain your metabolic rate stays nice and high.

Do Not Over-Do Cardio
We have had it beaten in to our heads that cardio is the be all and end all of fat loss. I am here to tell you it is NOT. The people I refereed to earlier in the article, that look the same as the day they walked in my gym- they are the ones who come in and do nothing but extended cardio work. The fancy lines of cardio equipment at the big box do look spiffy – but they aren’t doing much for your fat loss in most instances.

Here's my beef with cardio- it does NOTHING to increase metabolism- get that? NOTHING.

It's only saving grace is that is burns calories while you are performing it – but big deal really, so does brushing your teeth. How many calories you expend during a workout session (whether it be a cardio or weight session) is almost irrelevant. What matters is how many calories it expends in the long run.

When you complete a traditional cardio session you are done burning calories the second you step off the treadmill. This is not the case with resistance training. You continue to burn calories as a result of the workout for days and days (no joke).

Intervals to the Rescue
So what do you do instead of traditional cardio? Interval training. Interval training simulates the same metabolic response as a weight training session, and revs up the metabolic rate.

What is interval training? In it’s most basic form it is big moves (squats, burprees, sit ups push ups etc.), with very short rest. So something like…

Squats for 45 seconds Rest 15seconds Push Ups for 45 seconds Rest for 15 seconds etc…

It is hard and gasses you out fast. The good news is it doesn’t take very long (4-10 minutes in some cases) and as previously stated it can increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours. Our 6 step circuit system we use at Fitness One takes it even farther, giving you 45 min-1 hour of interval training AND your cardio, burning calories now, and calories later.

The number one thing to do is DON'T BE a QUITTER. I struggle with those people, who come to us searching what they need only to find it, and then let the laziness of the American lifestyle drag them away. Then, they fall prey to the claim of a miracle supplement or even worse a "body wrap" to help them lose weight. It is not only disappointing, but sad. If we can't save them, chances are they will stay the way they are for life. For LIFE. I do my best to stop this from happening, but I cannot force them to do what I, their doctors, the latest research, their families and their friends know that they need to do. Get in shape.

All it takes is to make a move and show up at Fitness One. We WILL do the rest. you just have to follow advice and be consistent. Missed it for the summer? No worries. Check out the newest Fitness Schedule and get back in action. Need help, just ask!

I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me

As one reads through the pages of both the Old and New Testaments, it becomes clear that God has a special place in His heart for 3 specific groups of people: widows, orphans and aliens (foreigners/strangers).  Here are just a few verses to illustrate this point:

"I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
Matthew 25:35

"God it is who sees justice done for the orphan and the widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. Love the stranger then, for you were once strangers in Egypt."
Deuteronomy 10:18-20

(Talking about widows)..."She must be a woman known for her good works - whether she has brought up her children, been hospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people..."
1 Timothy 5:10

"Continue to love each other like brothers, and remember always to welcome strangers, for by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it."
Hebrews 13:1-2

There is an organization called World Relief that works globally and locally to assist this group of people that God has asked us to love and support.  They need volunteers right here in the Triad to help refugees who have moved intp the area.  Check out this website for more information about how you can get involved: http://worldrelief.org/Page.aspx?pid=1808

Jeepers Creepers! Take Care of Your Peepers!

Thanks to Dr. Amy Harper from Harper Eyecare in Kernersville for joining us on the Morning Show today to discuss Eye Health.   For more information about Dr. Harper's practice, visit her website: http://www.harpereyecare.com/

Here is some info about  eye health according to the National Eye Institute:

Simple Tips for Healthy Eyes

Your eyes are an important part of your health. There are many things you can do to keep them healthy and make sure you are seeing your best. Follow these simple steps for maintaining healthy eyes well into your golden years.

Have a comprehensive dilated eye exam. You might think your vision is fine or that your eyes are healthy, but visiting your eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to really be sure. When it comes to common vision problems, some people don’t realize they could see better with glasses or contact lenses. In addition, many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs. A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages.

During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, your eye care professional places drops in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupil to allow more light to enter the eye the same way an open door lets more light into a dark room. This enables your eye care professional to get a good look at the back of the eyes and examine them for any signs of damage or disease. Your eye care professional is the only one who can determine if your eyes are healthy and if you’re seeing your best.

Know your family’s eye health history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with a disease or condition since many are hereditary. This will help to determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition.

Eat right to protect your sight. You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard 1greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too. Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.

Wear protective eyewear. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Protective eyewear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed to provide the correct protection for a certain activity. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear, as do some sporting goods stores.

Gettin' Fit With Allen

Allen Branch for Fitness One in Kernersville shared these tips on staying safe, healthy and avoiding injuries while getting fit.

Deal with your aches and pains right away!
  • For minor aches--Ice Therapy .  Try the "Dixie Cup" method of freezing water in Dixie Cups and using the cups to give yourself a targeted ice massage
  • Serious aches and pains--see the doctor.
Stay Hydrated!
  • To see how much water you lose when working out, weigh yourself before you work out and then after.  The weight you lose during that workout is the water you have lost, and that needs to be replenished.
  • Sports drinks have their place in rehydration, but unless you are a serious athelete dealing with huge fluid loss, water is a fine, calorie free substitiute.  You can water down your Gatorade to cut sugar and carbs.
  • Water & a banana are a great post-workout way to rehydrate and replenish.
For more information about these topics or any of the awesome programs offered at Fitness One, email Allen: trainer@myfitnessone.com.

Message from John Piper

John Piper's Upcoming Leave

By John Piper March 28, 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may have already heard in the sermon from March 27-28, the elders graciously approved on March 22 a leave of absence that will take me away from Bethlehem from May 1 through December 31, 2010. We thought it might be helpful to put an explanation in a letter to go along with the sermon.

I asked the elders to consider this leave because of a growing sense that my soul, my marriage, my family, and my ministry-pattern need a reality check from the Holy Spirit. On the one hand, I love my Lord, my wife, my five children and their families first and foremost; and I love my work of preaching and writing and leading Bethlehem. I hope the Lord gives me at least five more years as the pastor for preaching and vision at Bethlehem.

But on the other hand, I see several species of pride in my soul that, while they may not rise to the level of disqualifying me for ministry, grieve me, and have taken a toll on my relationship with Noël and others who are dear to me. How do I apologize to you, not for a specific deed, but for ongoing character flaws, and their effects on everybody? I’ll say it now, and no doubt will say it again, I’m sorry. Since I don’t have just one deed to point to, I simply ask for a spirit of forgiveness; and I give you as much assurance as I can that I am not making peace, but war, with my own sins.

Noël and I are rock solid in our commitment to each other, and there is no whiff of unfaithfulness on either side. But, as I told the elders, “rock solid” is not always an emotionally satisfying metaphor, especially to a woman. A rock is not the best image of a woman’s tender companion. In other words, the precious garden of my home needs tending. I want to say to Noël that she is precious to me in a way that, at this point in our 41-year pilgrimage, can be said best by stepping back for a season from virtually all public commitments.

No marriage is an island. For us this is true in two senses. One is that Noël and I are known inside-out by a few friends at Bethlehem—most closely by our long-time colleagues and friends David and Karin Livingston, and then by a cluster of trusted women with Noël and men with me. We are accountable, known, counseled, and prayed for. I am deeply thankful for a gracious culture of transparency and trust among the leadership at Bethlehem.

The other way that our marriage is not an island is that its strengths and defects have consequences for others. No one in the orbit of our family and friends remains unaffected by our flaws. My prayer is that this leave will prove to be healing from the inside of my soul, through Noël’s heart, and out to our children and their families, and beyond to anyone who may have been hurt by my failures.

The difference between this leave and the sabbatical I took four years ago is that I wrote a book on that sabbatical (What Jesus Demands from the World). In 30 years, I have never let go of the passion for public productivity. In this leave, I intend to let go of all of it. No book-writing. No sermon preparation or preaching. No blogging. No Twitter. No articles. No reports. No papers. And no speaking engagements. There is one stateside exception—the weekend devoted to the Desiring God National Conference combined with the inaugural convocation of Bethlehem College and Seminary in October. Noël thought I should keep three international commitments. Our reasoning is that if she could go along, and if we plan it right, these could be very special times of refreshment together.

The elders have appointed a group to stay in touch and keep me accountable for this leave. They are David Mathis, Jon Bloom, Tom Steller, Sam Crabtree, Jon Grano, Tim Held, Tony Campagna, and Kurt Elting-Ballard. Five of these have walked with Noël and me over the last two months, helping us discern the wisdom, scope, and nature of this leave. They brought the final recommendation to the elders on March 22.

I asked the elders not to pay me for this leave. I don’t feel it is owed to me. I know I am causing more work for others, and I apologize to the staff for that. Not only that, others could use similar time away. Most working men and women do not have the freedom to step back like this. The elders did not agree with my request. Noël and I are profoundly grateful for this kind of affection. We will seek the Lord for how much of your financial support to give back to the church, to perhaps bear some of the load.

Personally, I view these months as a kind of relaunch of what I hope will be the most humble, happy, fruitful five years of our 35 years at Bethlehem and 46 years of marriage. Would you pray with me to that end? And would you stand by your church with all your might? May God make these eight months the best Bethlehem has ever known. It would be just like God to do the greatest things when I am not there. “Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7).

I love you and promise to pray for you every day.

Pastor John

All Things St. Patty's Day...

If you really want to get into the spirit of St. Patty's Day, there's no easier or tastier way than whipping up a batch of Corned Beef and Cabbage.  Here is a tried and true recipe that I found several years ago on Allrecipes.com .  It's good, easy and my kids love it!  It's also fairly healthy, especially if you buy a low- sodium version of corned beef.  This is also good in the crock-pot. You can even use a pint of dark beer in with the cooking liquid to add more flavor.

Ingredients

-3 pounds corned beef brisket with spice packet
-10 small red potatoes
-5 carrots, peeled and julienned
-1 large head cabbage, cut into small wedges

Directions
Place corned beef in large pot or Dutch oven and cover with water. Add the spice packet that came with the corned beef.  Cover pot and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer approximately 50 minutes per pound or until tender.

Add whole potatoes and carrots, and cook until the vegetables are almost tender. Add cabbage and cook for 15 more minutes. Remove meat and let rest 15 minutes.

(If you are using your crock-pot, place carrots, potatoes, beef and spice packet in the pot, then cover with liquid and cook on low for 8-10 hours or 5-6 hours on high.  Throw in cabbage during the last 1-2 hours of cooking)

Place vegetables in a bowl and cover. Add as much broth (cooking liquid reserved in the Dutch oven or large pot) as you want. Slice meat across the grain.

Another easy, good recipe is this one for Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread
