Mission Mile

The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission will host the first ever Mission Mile Road Race on Saturday, July 31, at 8:00 AM. This exciting event will be a fun and healthy activity for the entire family. Texas Pete and Warco Enterprises are the major sponsors of this unique event whose course will travel through the heart of the beautiful Arts District area of downtown Winston-Salem.

The morning will feature three separate races based on level of skill- beginner, intermediate, and elite. There will be goody bags that include an official race t-shirt, custom water bottle and much more given to each participant. A live DJ, food, beverages, prizes, and awards will all be a part of the festivities as well. The race course will be monitored by the W-S Police Department, and the race event itself will be under the professional management of Off 'n Running of Greensboro.

This is a family-friendly event that will help generate funds for resident services and the Rescue Mission's Back-to-School Backpack Program which helps under-privileged children in our community.

I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me

As one reads through the pages of both the Old and New Testaments, it becomes clear that God has a special place in His heart for 3 specific groups of people: widows, orphans and aliens (foreigners/strangers).  Here are just a few verses to illustrate this point:

"I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
Matthew 25:35

"God it is who sees justice done for the orphan and the widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. Love the stranger then, for you were once strangers in Egypt."
Deuteronomy 10:18-20

(Talking about widows)..."She must be a woman known for her good works - whether she has brought up her children, been hospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people..."
1 Timothy 5:10

"Continue to love each other like brothers, and remember always to welcome strangers, for by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it."
Hebrews 13:1-2

There is an organization called World Relief that works globally and locally to assist this group of people that God has asked us to love and support.  They need volunteers right here in the Triad to help refugees who have moved intp the area.  Check out this website for more information about how you can get involved: http://worldrelief.org/Page.aspx?pid=1808
